Aviation and the World in Miniature – Annual Model Building Contest and Exhibition This Weekend!

DATE:19 / 11 / 2025

On 22 and 23 November, the Polish Aviation Museum in Kraków will become a Mecca for modellers! It is an excellent opportunity to see remarkable aircraft models, aviation dioramas, transport and technology-related vehicles and other objects in miniature scale — all crafted with passion and precision by both amateurs and professionals.

Miniatures that impress

On Saturday at 1:00 PM, the competition exhibition “Aviation and the World in Miniature” will open at the Polish Aviation Museum in Kraków. Modellers from all over Poland will present their work — not only aircraft, but also aviation dioramas, historic vehicles and technical designs in scale. This year’s edition of the competition has been expanded and, in addition to aircraft, includes ship models, vehicle models and cardboard models. Participants compete in three age groups: Cadets (up to 13 years), Juniors (14–18 years) and Seniors (19 years and over). The Museum has already received over 200 entries for the competition!

Exhibition, market, workshops, game demo… there’s lots happening!

On Saturday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and on Sunday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Museum visitors will have the opportunity (included in the admission ticket price) to view competition and non-competition models crafted with extraordinary skill.

The exhibition is accompanied by a modelling market — visitors will be able to purchase both model kits for self-assembly, tools and modelling materials, as well as finished miniature masterpieces made by other modellers.

One of the competition’s sponsors, the company Vanaheim, will conduct figurine painting workshops combined with a demo of the game “Bolt Action” — a miniature wargame set during World War II that uses 28 mm scale models. The workshops will take place on Saturday from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Registration is not required, but the number of participants is limited to 50.

May the best win!

The official announcement of results and award ceremony will take place on Sunday, 23 November at 2:00 PM. The jury will make its selection by evaluating, among other criteria: factual accuracy, quality of workmanship, degree of difficulty, realism (painting, markings, weathering) and the modeller’s personal contribution.

In addition to the prestigious awards from the Polish Aviation Museum, additional distinctions will also be presented, such as the Jan Kuszilek Memorial Statuette — for a senior, for an aircraft model that has its historical reference in the Museum; the Kay Franz Memorial Cup — for a junior, for the best aviation model related to Polish aviation; and prizes from competition partners, including the modelling companies ModelMaker and Kagero.

You can read more about the competition on the event page.

Accompanying event: Meeting by the Aircraft — aircraft construction

On Sunday, 23 November at 12:00 PM, the Museum will also host a special “Meeting by the Aircraft” — a fascinating lecture given by master Jan Hoffmann. The main topic will be the development of aircraft construction over approximately 120 years.

Jan Hoffmann will talk about the technological revolution in aviation: how materials, technologies and aircraft design have changed. And also: what fascinating things are being done in aviation modelling today — for fans of miniatures, this will be a real treat.
