Balloonists Will Celebrate With Us!

DATE:13 / 08 / 2024
Balon Małopolska

What is it like to spend several days and nights in the wicker basket of a balloon? Is it difficult to cover nearly 1,000 km by balloon in less than two days? What does the preparation process look like and what role does the ground crew play? Find out during Polish Aviation Day — 25 August!

We present another extremely interesting item on the Polish Aviation Day programme!

This year we celebrate the 90th anniversary of the victory of Franciszek Hynek and Władysław Pomaski in the 22nd Gordon Bennett Cup — the oldest and most prestigious balloon competition in the world. To properly honour this feat, which aroused emotions comparable to those generated today by the World Cup — during Polish Aviation Day you will be able to:

  • see the original Gordon Bennett Cup on loan from the Aero Club of Poland
  • attend a lecture by Dr hab. Krzysztof Mroczkowski — “The Gordon Bennett Cup 1933–35”
  • take part in a panel discussion with Jacek Bogdański and Przemysław Mościcki, the pilots of POL-1 — Team Poland One, representing Poland in this year’s 67th edition of the Gordon Bennett Cup

Jacek Bogdański is an experienced Polish balloon pilot who in 2018, together with Mateusz Rękas, won the Gordon Bennett Cup. Przemysław Mościcki recently joined the exclusive circle of gas balloon pilots, making his debut in last year’s Gordon Bennett Cup competition in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The event will be accompanied by an exhibition: Heroes of Polish Wings. The Victorious Crews of the 1934 Challenge and the Gordon Bennett Cup 1933–35.

You will also be able to admire stained glass replicas of the winning Gordon Bennett Cup balloons, created by Sławomir Intek from the Intek-Art Stained Glass Workshop in Toruń. The exhibition is made even more attractive by the fact that it will be held on the first floor of the Museum’s main building, which is normally closed to visitors.
