“Volare” — meaning “to fly”. This is the title of an exhibition presenting paintings by Bogumił Książek, whose vernissage will take place at 2:00 PM in the main building of our Museum as one of the attractions of Polish Aviation Day.
“Volare” is an instalment of the “Flights” series, originally inspired by the dream of the peasant visionary Jan Wnęk to rise into the air. The painter ventures into a surprising experiment within his own field, exploring how the principles of flying machine design can influence the painterly effect.
In the case of painting, however, the driving element is not air but light — whose rhythms and effects are an inherent component of the “coming into being” of the work.
The popular Italian branch of Futurism from the 1930s, known as aeropittura, involved professional artists painting pictures based on the experience of flying in an aeroplane and observing previously unknown perspectives of the world. Inspired by this, the abstract afterimages painted with an airbrush became an equal dimension, alongside the formal assumptions, of Bogumił Książek‘s paintings, enhancing the impression of lightness and soaring.
Bogumił Książek is a recipient of, among others, the 2024 Witold Wojtkiewicz Award for the exhibition “Flights”.
The vernissage will be accompanied by “Flying Picture” workshops organised at our Museum by the BWA Sokół Gallery of Contemporary Art of the Małopolskie Centrum Kultury SOKÓŁ in Nowy Sącz.
During the workshops, participants will create their own flying constructions — kites on which they will paint their own pictures.
Participation in the workshops is free of charge and does not require prior registration — the workshops will take place in the Museum’s exhibition hall from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM.
You will find the detailed programme of Polish Aviation Day in the Upcoming Events section.
We look forward to seeing you!
