This time we spent Polish Armed Forces Day in Nieciecza, taking part in the Military Picnic organised by WCR Tarnów. Thank you very much for the invitation! We were happy to come with our stand. We met many wonderful people, as guests flocked to the Picnic in large numbers — no doubt helped by the fantastic, sunny weather. We warmly encourage everyone to visit our Museum as well.
We especially thank the commander of WCR Tarnów, Col. Piotr Rowiński, who warmly welcomed Museum Director Tomasz Kosecki and Capt. (Pilot) Karol Bałdyga from the 8th Kraków Airlift Base, a member of the Museum Council. Colonel Rowiński also honoured Director Kosecki with a commemorative statuette in appreciation of his work in promoting new forms of military service and building a positive image of the Homeland and the Polish Armed Forces.
We too are pleased with our cooperation and look forward to many similar joint events in the future!
We encourage you to view the photo gallery from the event — you will find it at the bottom of the page.
You probably all know that on 15 August we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a public holiday in Poland. But why is 15 August also Polish Armed Forces Day?
Well, 15 August 1920 is considered the date of the Polish victory over the Bolsheviks in the Battle of Warsaw. Although fighting continued in the days that followed, it was on 15 August that the turning point occurred — namely, the raid by the Polish 8th Cavalry Brigade on Ciechanów. The Poles struck the Bolsheviks at dawn, by surprise — thereby gaining an enormous advantage. The enemy fled in panic, and Polish losses were minimal.
That moment tipped the scales of victory in favour of the Poles. The success of the 8th Cavalry Brigade had a huge impact on the further course of the battle and was one of the greatest achievements in the history of Polish cavalry.
We encourage you to deepen your knowledge about the Battle of Warsaw by watching a conversation with Dr hab. Mirosław Szumiło from the Historical Research Office of the Institute of National Remembrance — you will find it AT THIS LINK.
