The engine was developed at Brandenburgische Motorenwerke GmbH in Berlin. The company was founded in 1936 by Siemens GmbH and took over the aviation engine division of Siemens. The engine had steel cylinders with aluminium heads and was equipped with a supercharger and fuel injection. The Bramo Fafnir was used in the Dornier Do 17, Do 19, and Do 24T aircraft.
