A development of the Hispano-Suiza 12M engine from the late 1920s. It is an example of a lightweight, high-power engine designed for fighter aircraft. Six carburettors placed behind the supercharger fed two cylinders each, allowing optimal fuel supply.
This solution complicated maintenance but improved engine performance. The layout of the engine and its reduction gear allowed the installation of a cannon firing through the propeller shaft.
The Hispano-Suiza 12X, in many different versions, was used in aircraft from the 1930s, such as the Dewoitine D.500 and SPAD S.510.
