Klimow RD-10A

Country:Germany / USSR
Type:jet engine
Year:1946

The powerplant of the first Soviet turbojet aircraft.
The engine was used in the Yakovlev Yak-17W aircraft.

Production of the German Jumo 004 turbojet engine (used to power the Me 262 Schwalbe and Ar 234 Blitz aircraft) continued after World War II in Dessau under the control of Soviet occupation authorities. Due to non-compliance with the German demilitarization agreement, production was relocated to the territory of the USSR.

The technological changes introduced were aimed at increasing the engine’s thrust and extending its service life. The Klimov design bureau, led by Vladimir Klimov, was responsible for introducing the engine into serial production. Between 1946 and 1948, approximately 1,300 engines were built at plants in Ufa. Simultaneously, BMW 003 engines were produced, designated as RD-20 and RD-21. The abbreviation RD stands for reaktivnyy dvigatel in Russian nomenclature, meaning jet engine.
