Designed at the Saturn design bureau, whose chief designer was Archip Lyulka. He was one of the greatest specialists in the field of turbojet engines with axial compressors.
The engine was designed with supersonic aircraft in mind. Due to its design, the engine was best suited for bomber and transport aircraft. However, it was used in Su-7 fighter-bombers.
The engine was characterized by very high fuel consumption, which was its serious drawback. The maximum thrust was approximately 10 tonnes.
The exhibited AL-7 engine is the largest turbojet engine in the Museum’s collection.
