Mercedes D IVa

Country:Germany
Type:inline engine
Year:1916

The powerplant of many German G-class and R-class bombers.

The successor to the unsuccessful Mercedes D IV. This time, the designers returned to the 6-cylinder layout, and the increase in power was achieved by enlarging the cylinder displacement. To ensure proper cylinder filling and scavenging, four valves were used in each head and the mixture flow system was improved.

Used, among others, in the Albatros C.X, C.XII, C.XV reconnaissance aircraft, as well as in Gotha, Friedrichshafen, Linke-Hofmann, and Zeppelin-Staaken bombers.
