This engine, featuring four valves per cylinder, is an improved version of the legendary Liberty engine mass-produced by the Packard company. Originally planned to power military aircraft, it was produced in very limited quantities due to the end of the war.
The displayed specimen bears serial number 6. Engines of this type were installed on the Verville VCP-1 and Loening racing aircraft, which won the Pulitzer Trophy races in 1920 and 1922.
