PZL Kania

Country:Poland
Type:multirole helicopter
Year:1979

The PZL Kania (Kitty Hawk) is a multipurpose helicopter developed in the 1970s and 1980s at WSK PZL Swidnik based on the Mi-2, originally intended for export to Western countries. The most important changes compared to the Mi-2 include a redesigned fuselage, American Allison 250 engines and avionics equipment. Thanks to these changes, it has significantly higher performance, lower fuel consumption and greater payload than the Mi-2.

The prototype was first flown on 3 June 1979. Kania helicopters (2 examples) were operated in Poland by the Police aviation from 1996 to 2014 and are still operated by the Border Guard aviation.

Including prototypes, 19 examples were produced between 1979 and 2006. Apart from Poland, Kania helicopters were exported to the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Cyprus and Venezuela.

The Police Aviation Section of the Provincial Police Command in Krakow operated PZL Kania helicopters from 1996 to 2014. The exhibited example, serial number 900301, manufactured in 1996, was operated from 1996 to 2009 by the Police Aviation Section of the Provincial Police Command in Poznan, and from 2009 to 2014 in Krakow. It was donated to the MLP collection by the Logistics Bureau of the National Police Headquarters on 21 May 2020.
