Republic F-84F Thunderstreak

Country:USA
Type:fighter-bomber aircraft
Year:1952

An American fighter-bomber. It was developed as an improved version of the F-84E Thunderjet, with the main change being the introduction of swept wings. The prototype first flew on 3 June 1950. Its development was prolonged and it was not until 1954 that the first F-84Fs entered service with the USAF.

Its service life was short, as the prolonged development combined with the dynamic progress of jet aircraft in the 1950s meant that the F-84F was already an outdated aircraft by the time it entered service and was quickly superseded by machines with significantly higher performance and more advanced equipment.

By 1957, 2,348 examples had been built. Some USAF aircraft were capable of carrying a Mark 7 tactical atomic bomb with a yield of 20 kilotons on the left inner pylon. A reconnaissance version, the RF-84F Thunderflash, was also developed. F-84F and RF-84F aircraft were used in combat by France during the Suez Crisis in 1956.

The museum specimen with serial number 52-7157 was donated by the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History in Brussels.
