Schneider Motor Baby

The Schneider Motor Baby is a German motor glider designed by Edmund Schneider in the 1930s at his glider works in Grunau (now Jeżów Sudecki). It was created as a motorised version of the popular Grunau Baby II training glider, which after minor structural modifications was fitted with a two-cylinder Köller Kröber M4 engine of 18 hp, driving a pusher propeller, and wheel landing gear instead of a skid. Approximately 25 units were built.

These motor gliders were used in civil aviation and flight schools. German pilots set several records on them — for example, Friedrich Aufermann in 1937 reached an altitude of 2,950 m on an aircraft registered D-YKIL, and Werner Blech raised this record to 3,630 m.

After the war, three units captured from the Germans were rebuilt in Poland and received the registration marks SP-213, SP-325 and SP-448. They were operated at the Gliding Institute and at the gliding schools at Żar and Malbork until the early 1950s. In 1948, the DFS Schneider Motor Baby received the official Polish name “Hulajnoga”.

The exhibited aircraft, serial number 1028, SP-213, manufactured in 1938, was operated at the gliding school at Żar until 1953, and then transferred to the NOT Museum of Technology in Warsaw. It was donated from there to the Polish Aviation Museum collection on 1 October 1963.
