A fighter-bomber with variable-geometry wings, being a further development of the Su-17 (export designation Su-20) equipped with more modern navigation and targeting systems.
The Su-17M4 (export designation Su-22M4) was the most advanced version, introduced into production in 1980, equipped with the PrNK-54 navigation and targeting system with the Orbita onboard computer, enabling automatic guidance of the aircraft over the target and bomb release without visual contact, and the Klon laser station, used for guiding laser-guided missiles.
Approximately 100 Su-22 aircraft were delivered to Poland in 1984-1985. Several dozen of these aircraft, after overhauls combined with modernisation, are still operated by the Polish Air Force.
