To facilitate training and practice of Su-7 pilots, a new combat trainer version designated Su-7U was developed (at a branch of the Sukhoi Design Bureau at the production plant in Komsomolsk) and entered production at the beginning of 1966.
It was a long-awaited and at the same time very belated aircraft. It featured structural changes necessitated by the two-seat cockpit. The underwing ordnance weight was limited to 500 kg.
At the end of 1966, production of an export version for countries operating the Su-7BMK began, designated Su-7UMK. Poland purchased 8 Su-7U aircraft in 1969, 1971, 1976, 1977 and 1984. The Su-7 was operated by the Polish military aviation until 1990.
