A training (club) glider, developed in the 1960s at the Glider Research Centre in Bielsko-Biala by Eng. Jerzy Smielkiewicz.

It is a single-seat shoulder-wing glider of wooden construction, with a three-piece wing consisting of a centre section and detachable outer panels with dihedral. The prototype was first flown on 19 May 1966. Production of the first serial version SZD-30A began in 1967.

In 1978, the improved SZD-30C version was introduced into production. A total of 813 examples were built. Pirat gliders were exported to 25 countries and are still widely used in Poland for advanced training and practice flying.

The exhibited example, serial number W-290, registration SP-2503, is the second prototype, first flown on 5 August 1966. It was purchased in November 2020 from the PLL LOT Aero Club.
