One of the most famous Soviet radial engines.
An engine with a two-speed supercharger, designed by a team led by Arkady Shvetsov in 1941. It was developed based on the experience from the Spanish Civil War, which demonstrated the need for a compact, high-power, air-cooled engine. In 1942, production of the M‑82 version with a floatless carburettor began, but it did not meet expectations.
In 1942, a German BMW 801 engine was captured. Its fuel injection system was copied and adapted to Shvetsov’s design. In 1943, the fuel-injected ASz‑82FN version entered production. It was a very good engine, produced in numerous variants, totalling 70,000 units. It was used on aircraft such as the Tu‑2, La‑5FN, La‑7, Pe‑8, and Il‑12. The developed version ASz-82T powered the Il‑14 aircraft, and the helicopter version ASz-82W powered the Mi‑4 helicopter.
