A single-flow, twin-shaft turbojet engine, developed under the direction of S. Gavrilov as a further development of the R-11 engine.
It received a new five-stage high-pressure compressor, a new combustion chamber that made it easier to relight the engine at high altitude, and a new afterburner, while titanium was used more extensively in its construction.
It was used in the MiG-21 MF, SM, SMT fighter aircraft, the Su-15T and TM, as well as the MiG-21US trainer-combat aircraft.
