In 1950, the USSR developed an improved version, the MiG-15bis, with an improved airframe design, powered by the WK-1 engine with greater thrust. Between 1950 and 1952, 7,936 examples were produced in the USSR.
The MiG-15 and MiG-15bis aircraft took part in the Korean War between 1950 and 1953, being the main type of fighter used by North Korean, Soviet, and Chinese air forces.
Between 1954 and 1956, 500 MiG-15bis aircraft were produced under licence at WSK Mielec under the name Lim-2. At WSK Rzeszow, production of the WK-1 engine was launched under the name Lis-2.
