Lim-1 aircraft withdrawn from combat units were converted into the two-seat training version SB Lim-1, modelled on the MiG-15 UTI. The armament consisted of a 23 mm cannon. During overhauls, the aircraft received the rear fuselage section and Lis-2 engine from the Lim-2 aircraft. Aircraft rebuilt in this way were designated SB Lim-2.
