Main Building in the Competition Finals

On 5 December, the results of the “Life in Architecture” competition organised by the monthly magazine “Architektura-Murator” were announced. The Main Building of the Polish Aviation Museum was among the finalists in the public buildings category.

Nomination for the grand prize: "Best Public Building in Poland 2000-2012"
Nomination for the grand prize: “Best Public Building in Poland 2000-2012”

The competition’s task was to select the best buildings of the newest Polish architecture (from 2000–2012). 1,064 buildings were submitted to the competition, held under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland Bronisław Komorowski, in four categories. The jury was chaired by Krakow architect and professor at the Krakow University of Technology, Prof. Dariusz Kozłowski, and on behalf of the President sat Mirosław Bałka, Robert Konieczny, and Anda Rottenberg.

The Main Building of the Polish Aviation Museum (designed by Pysall.Ruge Architekten and Bartłomiej Kisielewski with their team) reached the competition finals as one of three in its category. The other nominations went to the Scientific Information Centre and Academic Library in Katowice (designed by Dariusz Herman, Piotr Śmierzewski, Wojciech Subalski) and the Passenger Terminal of Lublin Airport (designed by ARÉ).

The grand prize was awarded by the jury to the excellent project of the Katowice library. For the Main Building of the Polish Aviation Museum, which has already collected a number of architectural awards, being among the finalists is further proof of the value it brings to the architectural and cultural landscape of Krakow and Małopolska, while serving the public and its valuable collections well. Together with the nomination of the Lublin terminal, which won the internet poll accompanying the competition, the Krakow “propeller” is another example of the excellent results that come from the meeting of aviation and architecture.
