Death of J.P. Kennedy

During tests of a B-24 Liberator being adapted for unmanned suicide attacks, the aircraft exploded in mid-air over Suffolk. Among those killed was Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., the eldest brother of future US President John F. Kennedy.

First Space Shuttle Flight

The first independent flight of the Space Shuttle Enterprise took place. The shuttle was carried aloft on the back of a Boeing 747, and after separating, landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
