Pioneer balloon flight – on this day, Frenchman Jean-Pierre Blanchard and American John Jeffries made the first balloon crossing of the English Channel. The flight from Dover Castle to Guînes lasted 2.5 hours.

Flight Altitude Record

Flight altitude record – over Mourmelon-le-Grand in France, Hubert Latham became the first pilot in history to fly an aircraft above 1 km altitude. He reached a ceiling of 1,100 m, improving the previous record by 610 m.
