Maiden Flight of the DC-1

The prototype twin-engine American Douglas DC-1 aircraft made its maiden flight, beginning the Douglas Commercial series of passenger aircraft.

Opening of NYIA

New York International Airport, commonly known as Idlewild Airport, began operations. In December 1963, the airport was renamed after President John F. Kennedy, who had been assassinated a month earlier.
