The training aircraft PZL TS-8 Bies made its maiden flight. Between 1957 and 1960, 250 Bies aircraft were built and used for military pilot training before being transferred to aero clubs. Aircraft of this type can be seen at the Polish Aviation Museum.
A Boeing 767 of Air Canada experienced engine failure due to fuel exhaustion. The pilots safely glided the unpowered aircraft from an altitude of 8,500 metres to a landing at the disused Gimli Industrial Park Airport. The aircraft became known as the “Gimli Glider”.
