The American passenger aircraft Lockheed Vega made its maiden flight. The aircraft is known for record-breaking flights, including the first non-stop flight across the USA, a transatlantic flight, and a flight over the Arctic.
Immediately after take-off from Gibraltar, a British C-87 Liberator Express crashed into the sea. The crash killed the Prime Minister of the Polish Government-in-Exile and Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Armed Forces, General Władysław Sikorski, his daughter Zofia Leśniowska, and (probably) 14 other people. The pilot, Czech Eduard Prchal, survived.
