Maiden Flight of the X-1
Maiden flight of the X-1 – on this day, the American experimental jet aircraft Bell X-1 made its maiden flight. In 1947, Chuck Yeager at the controls of the Bell (in the XS-1 version) became the first to break the sound barrier in level flight.
