As part of Independence Day celebrations, the Aviator Monument was unveiled in Warsaw. The monument, designed by Professor Edward Wittig, was erected on Plac Unii Lubelskiej.
A LOT Polish Airlines Lockheed L-10 Electra passenger aircraft flying from Kraków to Warsaw crashed near Piaseczno during an approach in near-zero visibility. Of the 12 people on board, 4 were killed and 8 were injured.
Captain Pilot Tomasz Pajórek and Captain Pilot Mariusz Oliwa were killed in the crash of a PZL TS-11 Iskra training aircraft. The crew was performing aerial weather reconnaissance before a parade for National Independence Day. The aircraft crashed in a forest near Otwock. It was the third Iskra crash in 1998.
