Set against the backdrop of the Tatra panorama, the Nowy Targ airfield — one of the most beautiful in Poland — was established in the early 1930s through the efforts of the local LOPP committee.
For the official opening of this first tourist airfield in the Second Polish Republic — which took place on August 3, 1930 — a dozen or so military and civilian aircraft flew to Podhale.

Alongside combat fighter and bomber aircraft from the 2nd Air Regiment and machines of the Kraków Aero Club, two aircraft attracted particular attention from spectators — Junkers F.13 type planes. They bore the markings of the newly established airline company Polish Airlines “LOT,” founded on January 1, 1929. The airfield is associated primarily with competitive gliding sport and parachute training.
The Central Parachute School and the Polish Aero Club’s Wave Soaring Flight Center were located there. Many outstanding pilots earned diamonds for their gliding badges on the Tatra wave, taking off from the airfield in Nowy Targ. The Dropzone.pl parachute zone also operated there. For several years now, the airfield has been known as the Municipal Airfield in Nowy Targ.
Currently, the airfield in Nowy Targ (ICAO code: EPNT), located 2.8 km southeast of the town at ul. Lotników 1, is the headquarters of the Nowy Targ Aero Club, formerly known as the Podhale Aero Club and the Tatra Aero Club. The airfield has an entirely grass surface and features two runways — one on heading 120°/300° measuring 1,680 × 120 m, and another on heading 020°/200° measuring 680 × 200 m. The airfield is located in Class G airspace, extending from ground level to an altitude of 2,000 m. It handles only VFR traffic. The airfield has a hangar and terminal buildings belonging to the aero club, as well as a fuel station.
In the 1970s, there were plans to launch an air connection between Warsaw and Zakopane, which was to be operated by An-28 passenger aircraft, characterized by short takeoff and landing. The aircraft was to land in Nowy Targ, from where passengers would be transported to Zakopane by bus.
