Sybilla – the most important museum competition in Poland

The Sybilla Museum Event of the Year competition, organized by the National Institute of Museums, has long been considered the most important national award for museums and institutions dedicated to the protection of cultural heritage. Awards are given to projects that demonstrate high professionalism, a modern approach to museum narrative, educational activities, and a significant impact on the promotion of history and culture.

The competition finals and the Sybilla 2025 Awards Gala will take place on May 25, 2026, in Gdańsk. The jury’s verdict will be announced in the following categories: conservation and protection of cultural heritage; education; research projects; new and modernized permanent exhibitions; temporary exhibitions; and investments. The decision of online users will also be announced, choosing a single winner of the Audience Poll, without dividing the categories mentioned above.

An exhibition worthy of a trophy

Opening at the end of August 2025, the exhibition “Downwind and upwind – Civil Aviation” is the largest exhibition dedicated to civil aviation in Poland and one of the largest of its kind in Europe. It was held in the modern Hangar No. 5, built on the site of the historic hangar of the former 2nd Air Force Regiment in Kraków.

Spanning over 3,000 m², the exhibition presents a comprehensive history of Polish civil aviation—from pioneering flight tests and first designs, through the interwar period and the communist era, to contemporary achievements in air sports, transport, medical, and service aviation. The exhibits include over 40 aircraft, hundreds of unique memorabilia, documents, trophies, and archives, many of which are on public display for the first time.

The exhibition was designed as a modern, multi-layered story about the people, machines, and institutions that have shaped the history of Polish aviation for over a century. Multimedia solutions and a flight simulator zone, allowing visitors to experience the thrill of piloting an aircraft, are also integral parts of the exhibition.
