The Polish Aviation Museum is not only a place to preserve and promote Polish aviation heritage. It also encompasses the extensive green spaces of the historic Rakowice–Czyżyny Airport, which for years have served Krakow residents as a space for walking, running, recreation, and relaxation. That’s why we strive to ensure that these spaces are not only well-maintained but also functional and safe.
On the unfenced Museum grounds, facing Gen. T. Bora-Komorowskiego Avenue, we have just completed an investment involving the development of green spaces in the northern part of the former Rakowice-Czyżyny Airport. The aim was to improve the quality of public space and adapt it to the needs of those using this unique site.
When implementing the project, we were guided by both user convenience and environmental concerns. The new paths were created precisely where residents had naturally trampled paths through the greenery over the years. In line with environmental principles, they were constructed not with asphalt but with a permeable gravel surface, which better complements the character of the historic airport and will certainly be appreciated by walkers and runners.
The new paths are equipped with benches for rest and waste bins, helping to maintain order within the park. The benches are made of durable and aesthetically pleasing black locust wood, which, thanks to its weather resistance, will ensure years of use.
Signs with the park’s regulations have also been installed at the entrances to the park and along the new paths. We kindly ask all visitors to follow these rules. Thanks to our shared care for this space, we will be able to enjoy the new amenities for many years to come.
While the immediate surroundings of the new paths may currently resemble a construction site, this is only a transitional phase. The project included numerous plantings – 220 blackthorn bushes, land reclamation, and new lawns.
In just a few weeks, the area will once again be covered in lush greenery, which will not only enhance the aesthetics of the surroundings but also serve an important natural function, producing oxygen and supporting the local ecosystem.
This investment is another element of the Museum’s ongoing care for the areas open to the public. We regularly maintain cleanliness and order, including waste collection, regular grass mowing, greenery maintenance, and the removal of the effects of storms and strong winds, including fallen trees and branches.
We are committed to ensuring that this unique space is safe, aesthetically pleasing, and welcoming for everyone – both visitors to the Museum and residents using the recreational areas. All cleaning, construction, and greenery services for 2025-2026 were financed entirely from the Museum’s own funds, totaling PLN 339,521.00.
It’s worth noting that the project was carried out on the site of the historic Rakowice–Czyżyny Airport, used by pilots of the 2nd Air Force Regiment from 1921 to 1939 – a site of exceptional technical, patriotic, and cultural value. All work was carried out based on obtained building permits and the decision of the Municipal Conservator of Monuments.
The work was carried out in accordance with the approved construction design, the conservation program, and the conditions specified in the issued decisions. The entire project was carried out under the constant and direct supervision of the conservator.
