On the occasion of the Flag Day of the Republic of Poland, 2 May 2025, the Polish Aviation Museum in Kraków prepared a special surprise for visitors. On that day, for the first time, we publicly presented two extremely valuable exhibits that recently enriched our collections – airfield flags from the World War II era, brought to Poland from Great Britain.
These unique canvas flags are tangible evidence of the presence of the Polish Air Forces in the West. They were used at Allied airfields as part of the marking of operational zones where Polish airmen served, fighting for the freedom of England and their homeland. Today they represent not only priceless artefacts of military technology, but also a moving symbol of faithfulness to national colours – even far from home, in the most difficult moments of its history.
We also invite you to watch an interview with Lt Col (Pilot) Szczepan Kurpisz, who, together with Col. Brudnicki, brought these valuable exhibits to Poland:
Flag Day was an excellent opportunity to recall that the white-and-red colours accompanied Polish airmen also in the clouds over England, France and Africa, emphasising their identity and indomitability. All the more, we are pleased that on this symbolic day we could share this part of our newest collection with you.
The flag exhibition in the Main Hangar was available on 2 May during Museum opening hours – in a space where the history and symbolism of Polish wings have always gone hand in hand!
