III International Heritage Security Congress KOBED’25 – Polish Aviation Museum as Co-Organiser

DURATION:02 / 06 / 2025 - 04 / 06 / 2025

The Polish Aviation Museum in Kraków had the honour of co-organising the 3rd Heritage Security Congress – KOBED’25, which took place on 2–4 June 2025. This year’s edition of the Congress, organised jointly with the Heritage Security Institute, the Wawel Royal Castle, the Polish Naval Academy in Gdynia and the City of Kraków, took on an international character, focusing on the issue of protecting natural heritage in crisis situations.

A shared responsibility for the future of heritage

Contemporary conflicts and disasters – both man-made and natural – contribute every day to the irreversible loss of cultural and natural heritage treasures. KOBED’25 became a platform for the exchange of knowledge, experience and good practices in the field of heritage protection in crisis situations.

Congress topics

During the three-day event, participants took part in panel sessions, workshops, exercises and debates devoted to, among other things:

  • legal and practical aspects of natural heritage protection in crisis and wartime situations,
  • the effects of climate change on heritage,
  • the history of nature protection during armed conflicts,
  • the protection of biodiversity, natural resources, historic gardens and parks under threat,
  • cooperation between uniformed and civilian services in the field of heritage security,
  • dilemmas of protecting endangered species vs. heritage objects.

The Congress was simultaneously interpreted into English and Polish, and its programme was designed with representatives of the academic and conservation communities, cultural institutions, uniformed services, public administration, non-governmental organisations, as well as students and enthusiasts in mind.

The Museum as co-organiser

We are proud that for the second time the Polish Aviation Museum was able to host this prestigious event in its spaces. The Museum Director, Tomasz Kosecki, not only sat on the Programme Council of the 3rd Heritage Security Congress, but also actively participated in its proceedings – as the moderator of Session VIII, devoted to the restoration of fauna and flora following a crisis situation or the end of an armed conflict.

For the Polish Aviation Museum, as an institution safeguarding technical and military heritage, participation in organising KOBED’25 was an important step towards building awareness of the need to protect heritage – not only tangible, but also natural – in times of uncertainty. We hope that the Congress has become an inspiration to create new protective mechanisms, initiate joint actions and develop international cooperation in the name of shared responsibility for the heritage of future generations.
