On Sunday, 23 November, the jubilee twentieth edition of the Kraków Museums Open Day took place. At the Polish Aviation Museum in Kraków, visitors could take part in two special guided tours of the exhibition “With the Wind and Against the Wind — Civil Aviation”, opened in August during the Małopolska celebrations of Polish Aviation Day.
The guided tours were scheduled for 12:00 and 14:30 and lasted approximately one hour. During the walks through the exhibition, participants learned about exhibits related to Polish civil aviation and the stories of the people who created it, as well as fascinating facts about this part of aviation history.
As part of the Kraków Museums Open Day, which encompassed 24 museums across 48 locations throughout the city, the Polish Aviation Museum offered special guided tours at a price of PLN 5 per person, with groups limited to a maximum of 25. This allowed participants to spend time in an intimate atmosphere, leisurely viewing the exhibits and learning about the individual stages of civil aviation development in Poland.
The exhibition “With the Wind and Against the Wind — Civil Aviation” is the largest exhibition dedicated to civil aviation in Poland and one of the largest of its kind in Europe. It occupies over 3,000 m² and presents the history of Polish civil aviation — from its pioneering beginnings to contemporary achievements in aviation sports, aircraft design and commercial aviation services.
It is a comprehensive story about the people, machines and institutions that shaped aviation reality in Poland over more than a century. Among the hundreds of exhibits are aircraft, gliders, documents, personal memorabilia, awards and models — many of them displayed publicly for the first time. The exhibition is divided into seven thematic spaces, through which visitors can learn about the beginnings of aviation on Polish lands, the development of sport aviation during the interwar period and the communist era, the role of women in Polish aviation, domestic civil aircraft designs, contemporary forms of sport aviation, model building, hang gliding, parachuting and much more.
