This year’s edition of the Kraków Museums Open Day (DOMK) took place on Sunday, 17 November. Participants had the opportunity to visit over 55 museum branches and galleries operating in the city, which not only made their permanent and temporary exhibitions available but also prepared special attractions. Our Museum also joined the initiative – check out what unique events awaited visitors that day!

As part of the Kraków Museums Open Day, the Polish Aviation Museum had many attractions awaiting visitors of all ages from 10:00 AM! Science workshops for the youngest visitors, a special film screening in our Museum cinema hall where viewers sit in real aircraft seats, a special guided tour with a YouTuber!…

“Physics of Flight for Toddlers” Workshop

workshops for families with children (toddlers aged 4–6)

The meeting began with workshops where children learned about basic aircraft such as gliders, aeroplanes, helicopters and balloons, and found out why they fly. Workshop participants could also try their hand at flying gliders and spinning propellers themselves.

At the end, a guide led the whole group on a short, 30-minute walk around the Museum grounds, showing them in person the machines he had previously talked about. An additional attraction was going inside one of the aircraft and seeing it from the inside.

Aviator Cinema

We screened an iconic action film (a sequel to the 1986 film) with elements of drama, an American production in which you could admire the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. This modern multirole fighter is the successor to the famous F/A-18 Hornet and is currently one of the main aircraft used by the United States Navy. The film also “featured” a single-seat, multirole fifth-generation stealth fighter – the Su-57, which has reduced radar detectability and is the newest fighter of the Russian armed forces. It is also the first Russian aircraft in history built with stealth technology.

The film told the story of a flight school in the United States and the personal and professional struggles of Navy pilots… can you guess the title?

Museum Guided Tour with a YouTuber

The tour was led by the creator of the YouTube “Zabytki Nieba” (Sky Heritage) film series and Polish Aviation Museum employee Marek Siuta, who gave an engaging account of the most interesting historical events in Polish aviation.

Unique opportunity to explore exhibits from the inside

During the Kraków Museums Open Day, as a special attraction at our Museum, visitors could also enter the interiors of helicopters:

  • Sud-Aviation SE-3160 Alouette III – the world’s first mass-produced helicopter with a turbine engine,
  • Bell CH-136 Kiowa, which gained fame for its participation in the Vietnam War, and whose developed versions still serve around the world today.
