On Friday, 20 December, the vernissage of a temporary exhibition presenting the figure of Szczepan Grzeszczyk took place – a pre-war glider constructor, glider and aeroplane pilot, instructor and promoter of gliding. Founder of the gliding school in Bezmiechowa.
The exhibition was opened by Tomasz Kosecki, Director of the Polish Aviation Museum.
Our duty as a Museum is not only to protect and preserve artefacts that bear witness to history, but also to bring the public closer to the figures of outstanding people who created that history. – said the Director.
We invite you to view the photo gallery from the vernissage:
On 12 display boards richly illustrated with numerous archival photographs, the biography of the outstanding Polish glider pilot and constructor was presented, along with his design achievements and descriptions of the gliders he constructed.
On 13 March 1928, Szczepan Grzeszczyk carried out a flight on an amateur CW-I glider, and on 26 May of the same year, during the first Gliding Expedition of the ZASPL to Łysa Góra near Złoczów, which he organised himself, he set two national gliding records: flight duration (4 min 13 s) and altitude (40 m). This achievement proved that Poland had conditions favourable for gliding, which initiated its dynamic development.
The display case also featured original photographs, an album, documents and construction drawings by Szczepan Grzeszczyk.
We invite you to visit the exhibition!
The exhibition patron is Kraków Airport.
